Why is friskies bad

Cats need meat to survive and thrive. Nestle is responsible for almost half the cat food brands on the market today. What about meat by-products? We have no idea what type of animal that is. And we have no idea what type of by-products this is.

Good-quality cat food products will list the exact by-products. The ingredients will read turkey heart, turkey liver, turkey kidney, turkey bones, etc. These color additives can damage DNA cells and contribute to cancer.

What type of meat by-products are in this food? Is it chicken? Moisture is removed during the 3 cooking extrusion processes in which kibble is made. JM Smucker is another conglomerate that has its hands in pet food. A few other questionable ingredients include sugar, guar gum, carrageenan, modified food starch, and the list goes on. Carbs break down into sugar. And sugar fuels obesity and related diseases. Additionally, the dentists and hygienists that participated in the survey were unaware that the survey was being conducted by Colgate.

But again, I can buy pork by-products at the grocery store. We have no way of knowing what type of by-products are used in cat food and how clean they are. We have major corporations that make junk food for humans. General Mills , a cereal company, owns all Blue Buffalo products. At this point, it should come as no surprise that a cereal manufacturing company also owns cat food companies. All companies say that their cat food is the best.

But why are there so many brands within the same company? My husband and son had been purchasing the box packages of Friskies canned cat food, because it was cheaper than other brands. A few days ago, when my husband brought home a new box, when I put it down, Finnigan sniffed it, and walked away.

He refused the rest of the can that evening, and refused a different flavor when we offered it. I asked my husband to stop at the PetSmart to purchase different brands of canned food. This evening, I put down the rest of the can, and again he wolfed it down.

Licked that plate clean. My husband picked up a bag of dried cat food at PetSmart called Naked Essentials, that is grain free and holistic. Finnigan enjoys some of those kibbles once in a while. As I understand it, officials in China executed the heads of pet food corporations due to including tainted meat into the pet food. My situation is a bit different, as I have many older cats as a result of my rescue days. My solution this may not work for everybody is to make my own cat food and use a friskies 5oz can as a flavoring agent.

I can find fresh chicken thighs at a per-pound cost lower than friskies and I have a reliable recipe from catfoodinfo. I also have a freezer, so I can make pounds of food at a time and freeze daily portion in reusable dishwasher safe deli containers I get at smart and final. Cheaper, MUCH better food comes with just a bit of work a couple of times a month.

Every morning I get their container of homemade, pop a can of friskies, mix it all up and dish it out. They love it, and I feel much better about feeding them a quality wet food. Catfoodinfo suggests raw food. My cat is allergic to beef and it is really annoying when contents contain beef but it is not specifically named. I got suspicious of Friskies turkey and giblets pate when she started to go crazy with her scratching of ears and head and jaws.

I live in NZ and wish I could ……… sigh — never mind — thank you for your info. I recently rescued a underweight barn kitten at 6 weeks old. I got a box of variety pack frisked pate food because it is cheap and one of the only options I had to get him for that first day he came home with me. I have been feeding him the friskies with a mix of different brand grain free kitten kibble and wet food along with a multivitamin and nutri cal to get some weight on him. The poor thing has had diarrhea off and on for the past two days and I thought perhaps it was his first round of dewormer that got his tummy upset, after reading all of this and other reviews I am more inclined to think it is the frisked food that is making my poor little guy sick.

He already got a rough start I dont need greedy companies making his life rougher than it is already. Cats are like children.

They depend on you and their diet is what will determine their overall health. Literally not a single one. I have been feeding my cat friskies pate wet can food for 17 years. I had no problem. I now feed my 5 yrs old male cat extra gravy pate tuna. So far no problem. I also switched my dry food to clear live pro plan dry food because I am allergic to my cat.

I vary it up with healthy treats and weekly special meals, but Friskies remains the staple. It far-and-away beats killing and eating doves, which they did before I came along and they adopted me.

My cat just die today and she was roughly about 14 years old and yes she was a little big. She was very happy today running around chasing the other cat and play frightening. I saw her laying there so cute I decided to take her picture. She did not move at all I thought that was odd so I called her name Snowflake and she did not answer me. I was wondering if you could do a review for the brand Brit Care? I have bought some for my cat and will try it out.

Popular in the community. Cat Fun. Cat Health. In my case, however, I was feeding my 2 then healthy kittens Merrick and Wellness canned foods mostly, and feeding 2 kittens that are ravenously hungry, I needed to curb costs. In my experience, every single time they ate Friskies, they got loose stools. They didn't seem to like it as much as the Merrick or Wellness, either, but I was shopping a lot at Petco then, too. It was later when I really looked more in-depth about their ingredients that made me reconsider Friskies.

D 1 So then I asked myself, "what are meat by-products" and "poultry by-products"? But there's also coloring, artificial flavors, and menadione sodium bisulfite complex another ingredient that is worrisome , so I decided no more Friskies for my two.

It could also be that the quality of Wellness and Merrick vs. Friskies is so different than what they're used to made them get the runny stools, but after seeing what it really contains or possibly contains , I decided firmly against it. On another note, Dr. Lisa Pierson mentions this regarding by-products: This is an area of controversy.

However, by-products have a much worse reputation than they deserve. By-products are normal parts of a carnivore's diet and consist of some very nutritious organ meats such as liver, spleen and kidney. On the other hand, by-products can also include feet and feathers which are of very low biological value. The problem is that it is impossible for the consumer to determine the quality of by-products contained in any food and the quality can vary with each company and batch of food.

As just stated, by-products that end up in cat food include very nutritious items but they also contain organs that have been deemed "unfit for human consumption". Organs that show signs of disease such as cancer or infection are 're-routed' from the human meat market to the pet food market. The fact that cats eat by-products in the wild cannot be disputed. However, by-products that are consumed fresh 'on the hoof' are not the same as those that have been designated as unfit for human consumption.

Therefore, the two situations are not entirely comparable. The whole issue of by-products or no by-products is a personal one. We also have to pick our battles with our cats.

For instance, many cats love Friskies, 9-Lives, and Fancy Feast varieties that contain by-products and we all know how picky cats can be and how important it is for them to eat - especially when they are ill or are diabetic and must eat on schedule. On a personal note, my parents' cat has eaten only Friskies canned food since he was rescued from the euthanasia list at our local shelter when he was 5 months old.

Tyke is now 15 years of age and is in great shape. He still runs up and down the hallway at the speed of light. On a favorable note, at least by-products: are not hyperallergenic if coming from an animal the cat is not allergic to, do not contribute a carbohydrate load to the food, and are of animal origin - not plant origin.

It also makes much more sense to include some animal-derived by-products in a carnivore's diet than it does to add potentially hyperallergenic, high carbohydrate grains like corn, wheat, rice, or soy. Note that soy is also a thyroid disruptor. Last edited: Jan 31, They've never had loose stools or smelly stools. They poop less on this food, too. So it definitely varies by cat. Joined Jul 5, Messages 2, Purraise I think Friskies is decent food. I wish my cats would eat it.

I have tried every flavor of the Pate formulas and they refuse to touch it.
