Why does ruby want lilith dead

While Dean is in Hell, Ruby returns to Sam. Distraught with grief, he refuses to speak to her while she is possessing someone. She finds a woman in a hospital and possesses her as she is declared dead. At Sam's lowest point she seduces him. I referenced Monster's Ball right in the script. We were asking ourselves, "Where's the lowest place Sam can go in a state of despair?

It's kind of like self-mutilating and calling it getting dressed for the prom. Ruby convinces Sam that she can help him develop his powers so he can kill Lilith and avenge Dean's death. She gets him to practice with his powers, and also gets him drinking her blood in order to enhance his powers. After Dean's return, Sam keeps his relationship with Ruby a secret - continuing to drink her blood and develop his powers so he can kill Lilith, who is breaking the 66 Seals that are keeping Lucifer captive.

Driven by a desire to prove himself capable to both Dean and himself, Sam fails to realize Ruby is using him, and rejects Dean's advice not to trust her. When Sam finally kills Lilith, Ruby reveals that Lilith's death is the final seal, the one which will free Lucifer.

She taunts him that it was not the demon's blood that has driven him down this path, but his own decisions. As Lucifer rises, Dean arrives, and kills Ruby with her own knife while Sam holds her in place from behind, a move that seems to hurt her. The group is then joined by Ruby who gets in on the the fight and attacks the demons with a knife; the knife appears to be able to kill demons.

Ruby kills two demons while Sam helps her kill a third. Ruby reveals to Sam that she knows who he is. She then disappears.

Ruby meets with Sam unexpectedly as he researches ways to save Dean's soul. She claims she is a hunter and talks with Sam about his past and his destiny; this sets Sam on a path to research more about his mother, Mary Winchester.

Disturbed to find out all of his mother's friends are dead, Sam demands to know exactly who Ruby is. Ruby reveals that she is a demon and claims that Sam fascinates her. Ruby tells Sam that she is in the pursuit of knowledge for her own ends and is "on his side.

Sam tells Dean about his encounter with Ruby, although not about the information she gave him about the deaths of Mary's friends.

Dean is angry that Sam didn't kill the demon, while Sam insists that they can use her to get information about the demons they are battling and Dean's deal with the crossroads demon.

Ruby comes to Bobby while he is working on the Colt. Bobby shoots her with it, but with no effect. Ruby offers to help Bobby make it work, and they succeed - Bobby brings the Colt to a hunt Dean and Sam] are on and Sam kills two demons with it. They come to a truce again when Ruby reminds Sam that if he kills her, she can't help him save Dean's soul. She refers to herself as "the little fallen angel" on Sam's shoulder. Ruby appears to warn Sam and Dean away from the town where they are investigating a coven of witches.

She tells them a demon is present that will come after Sam. Dean tries to shoot her with the Colt, but Sam intervenes. Since Sam won't agree to just leave Anna to fend for herself as Ruby suggests, she urges him to use his powers to get rid of Alastair, telling him that he could get exorcise Alastair easily if he hadn't let his abilities get "flabby.

She still joins him, Dean, Sam, and Anna in traveling to Union, Kentucky to retrieve Anna's grace, but when they find out that it is already gone, Ruby is further frustrated, as Anna can't regain her powers and protect them now and they still have to deal with both angels and demons coming after them. Ruby goes to a crossroads , where she burns her own hex bag, letting Alastair find her.

Faced with his disdain about her protecting an angel, she tells him that even though she is a traitor to Hell , she never wanted to be in this situation. She offers to make a deal with him: she will trade him Anna if he will let her and the Winchesters go. She is taken prisoner by his minions instead, and he spends the rest of the night torturing her with her own knife. When he finally lets her speak to tell him where Anna is, she tells him that she won't tell him because then he would just kill her; however, she is willing to lead him and his minions directly to Anna if he lets her off the torture rack.

When they get there to find Castiel and Uriel already there, Alastair's side gets into a fight with the angels and the still badly-injured Ruby is left to crawl out of the way. After the fight ends with Anna an angel again and both her and Alastair gone, it is revealed that Ruby had gone to Alastair with the Winchesters' approval to bring him and his demons to Anna as part of Sam's plan to bring the demons and angels together to get them to fight each other; it is implied that Ruby had actually unknowingly given Sam the idea for this plan with her "Godzilla vs.

Mothra" comment. It had taken Ruby longer than any of them had expected to get Alastair there because of how long Alastair had spent torturing her, and so she almost got the demons there too late for the plan to work.

Ruby accuses Sam of wasting time - thirty-four of the seals have been broken. Sam says that he doesn't know where the seals are or how to stop them from being broken. Ruby counters that he needs to go after the source of the problem - Lilith. Sam refuses and Ruby leaves. Later, Sam has a conversation with Dean in which Dean says he doesn't see that he and Sam could have a happy future. This leads Sam to rejoining Ruby and the hunt for Lilith. Ruby does not appear physically, but Dean redials the last number on Sam 's phone and her voice is heard first greeting Sam, then asking if he's there when "Sam" doesn't answer her.

Dean hangs up without saying anything. Earlier in the episode, Sam was discussing a lack of demonic omens with Ruby on the phone, ending with both promising to keep looking and Sam telling her would be calling her soon.

Sam and Dean are heading to meet Ruby, who has some leads on Lilith , when Castiel and Uriel kidnap Dean so he can interrogate Alastair. When Ruby arrives, she is displeased with the prospect of getting involved with angels again, especially because she sees no reason for them to interfere with Dean interrogating Alastair when it seems that Sam is only concerned about Dean's psychological well-being.

After he reveals that his real problem with it is that Dean wouldn't be strong enough to get the necessary information from Alastair, however, Ruby goes along with it and casts a spell to locate Dean. She reassures Sam that he can have "it" and that it's okay, kissing him before she cuts her inner-arm open with a knife from her ankle sheath and has him drink her blood —the source of his growing powers and abilities. While Sam is too busy feeding to look at her expression, Ruby smirks to herself, still petting his hair and telling him that it's okay.

Sam calls Ruby, desperate for more demon blood but she doesn't answer his calls. Ruby meets up with Sam after he escapes from Bobby's panic room. After letting him feed on her, Ruby tells Sam there are only two or three seals left to be broken. She says only " Lucifer 's first" can break the final seal - and that is Lilith. This renews Sam's desire to kill Lilith. She says she has a lead on a demon close to Lilith who is nearby. As they prepare to leave, Dean arrives and tries to kill Ruby, but Sam stops him.

Ruby leaves as the brothers start to argue. Following Sam and Dean 's fight in the preceding episode, Ruby tries to reassure Sam, but he insists that they concentrate on killing Lilith as quickly as possible.

Ruby takes him to the demon possessing Cindy McClellan and helps him capture her. The demon reveals that Lilith will be at St. Mary's Convent at midnight the following day and begs for death, but Ruby stops Sam from killing the other demon, as Ruby says that they need her alive to harvest her blood for Sam to drink in addition to Ruby's own blood so that he will become powerful enough to kill Lilith.

When the demon relinquishes control to her meatsuit or at least pretends to and makes Sam hesitant to go through with it, Ruby pressures Sam to do it anyway, but it is only when Sam listens to a hurtful voicemail left by Dean and altered by Zachariah that he agrees to it at the last minute.

With Sam's permission, Ruby bleeds Cindy dry, kills both her and the demon, and supplies Sam with all the blood she drained from Cindy. Ruby accompanies Sam as he kills Lilith's minions and then confronts Lilith herself. When Dean arrives, Ruby smirks at him and telekinetically locks him out to prevent him from interfering.

When Dean starts to get through to Sam with his yells, Ruby screams at Sam to hurry up and kill Lilith, which he eventually does. At first, Ruby is stunned that Sam actually managed to kill Lilith, then grows jubilant because—as she reveals to an appalled Sam—Lilith's death was the last seal and they have just set Lucifer free.

She explains that she has secretly been working for Lilith all along to free Lucifer something only Lilith herself knew , and basks in her success after all that she has gone through in bringing this about, declaring herself the best, most loyal demon. Her exuberance fades when Sam tries to kill her for her treachery with his powers.

Sam accuses her of "poisoning" him with demon blood , but she tells him that the choices he has made all year have been all him; she only laid out the possibilities and he chose the "right" way each time. She tries to convince Sam that Lucifer's freedom is a good thing and they will be rewarded. She also starts to tell Sam why he was the only one who could bring this about but is interrupted when Dean finally breaks in and charges towards her.

Ruby turns to confront him, taunting him that it's too late, only to get caught off-guard when Sam grabs her from behind and holds her in place as Dean stabs her with her own knife.

She chokes in pain as a vengeful Dean twists the knife and carves into her body, prolonging her agony before he finally removes the knife and she dies. Ruby's corpse is briefly visible on the floor of St.

Mary's Convent before Lucifer 's light grows too bright to see anything else. Later, Sam reveals that Ruby had taught him how to make hex bags , which he and Dean use to hide themselves from angels and demons.

He apologizes to Bobby for not listening to him and Dean about Ruby. When Meg appears in her new meatsuit , Dean initially assumes that she is Ruby returned before Meg encourages him to think further back. At the end of the episode, the rift Ruby caused between the brothers continues when Dean admits that, because of how Sam betrayed him in favor of Ruby, he doesn't feel that he can trust Sam anymore.

Sam reveals that one of the reasons he worked with Ruby was to get away from Dean because it made him feel strong and independent. When Gabriel places Sam and Dean in the Japanese game show, the question the show's host asks Sam is what the name of the demon he chose over his own brother is. It is ingrained in her being, and it drives her to ruin. He wants revenge and Ruby shows up ready to grant his wish.

He also wanted to make sure Lilith was dead when he found her. Ruby enticed him with a power that could do this, that could save people possessed by demons, that could kill Lilith and other demons without sacrificing their hosts. She seduced him with this power and took advantage of his grief. One of them was in convincing Sam that he was doing good by pulling demons without killing their hosts. By doing so, she also allowed Lilith the time she needed to break 65 seals before Sam killed her as the 66th.

Then, after Dean comes back from the dead, she insists on keeping her relationship with Sam a secret from the moment Dean finds them in the hotel room. Castiel and Uriel also left. During Criss Angel Is A Douchebag , while Sam was alone in his and Dean's motel room, Ruby confronted him and accused him of wasting time with minor hunts, as Lilith has already broken over half of the seals.

In response to his pointing out that he doesn't know where the seals are or how to stop them from being broken, Ruby told him that he needed to go after Lilith herself to protect the rest of the seals.

She again tried to convince him to continue drinking her blood in order to kill Lilith, but he refused, prompting her to leave in anger. After the Winchesters solve the case, a conversation Sam has with his brother in which Dean says that he doesn't foresee a happy future for either of them , Sam agreed to rejoin Ruby in the hunt for Lilith, stating that he doesn't want to still be hunting when he is old.

During Sex and Violence , When Dean was alone in the hotel room, he dialed the last number on Sam's phone out of suspicion of Sam's secrets—Ruby answered, and he immediately hung up. Although Ruby was reluctant to get involved with angelic matters again and believed that Dean interrogating Alastair was a good thing, Sam urged her to help him find his brother, saying that Dean was not who he used to be and wouldn't be able to get answers out of Alastair.

She located Dean using a spell and finally succeeded in getting Sam to feed on her blood again after weeks, reassuring him that it was "okay" to ease his doubts. In the episode The Rapture , Ruby had stopped contacting Sam for three weeks, likely in an attempt to tie him even more tightly to her by withholding the blood he is now addicted to. Eventually Sam became desperate enough to drink from another demon in front of his shocked brother, accidentally exposing the secret to him.

During When the Levee Breaks , Sam was locked in Bobby's panic room to undergo a long and painful detox by Dean and Bobby, but was secretly released by Castiel. Ruby and Sam met up at the honeymoon suite of a motel. When asked, she said that she didn't know how he escaped the panic room but was happy that he had. She also expressed sympathy for his pain and surprise at Dean's actions, saying that the deterioration of Sam and Dean's relationship was "sad".

She explained that she had not contacted Sam because she had been investigating Lilith. He fed on Ruby's blood and it was implied they had sex. Afterwards, she commented that his "appetite" had grown and reassured him that it meant he was now strong enough to kill Lilith, informing him that there were only about two seals left to be broken.

Ruby explained that only Lilith could break the final seal as the first demon Lucifer made; however, she did not tell him that Lilith's death was the final seal. Not knowing this, Sam's desire to kill Lilith to stop her from breaking the last seal was renewed. Ruby and Sam prepared to capture Lilith's "chef" , but Dean arrived and tried to kill Ruby. She fought him off long enough for Sam to intervene and help her to escape.

Ruby fled the room while the brothers started to argue, resulting in a brutal fight in which Sam almost killed Dean, who then cut his ties with his brother as Sam had chosen Ruby, a demon, over him. In Lucifer Rising , Ruby tried to comfort Sam by saying that the brothers could fix their relationship after killing Lilith, but he regretfully disagreed. They kidnapped a nurse named Cindy McKellan who was possessed by Lilith's "chef", and interrogated her, learning that Lilith would be at a convent, built on the ground over Lucifer's cage , to break the final seal.

Ruby stopped Sam from killing "Cindy" because she wanted him to drink the possessed nurse's blood in order to be more powerful; Lilith's chef, incensed, relinquishes her control over Cindy's body, causing the nurse to wake up and panic.

Ruby was irritated by Sam's reluctance to bleed and kill Cindy. When he listened to the fake voice message "Dean" probably Zachariah left him, Ruby was watching from behind him with a smug, calculating smirk which changed to comforting and supportive as soon as Sam turned back towards her, resigned and giving her permission to kill Cindy. She was pleased with his capitulation and rushed to ensure the deed was done.

Ruby watched as Sam confronted and killed Lilith; when Dean arrived to stop him, having been told about the final seal and sent to stop Sam by Castiel, Ruby noticed his presence and telekinetically shut and locked the doors. After Lilith's death, an exultant Ruby finally confessed the truth of her own allegiance to a horrified Sam, revealing how she had been manipulating him, had been a key part of Lilith's plan and no one knew but Lilith that she was following her orders; Dean had been right all along.

With condescension in her voice, she made it clear that Sam never needed to consume demon blood, and it was just a placebo effect. All Sam needed to kill Lilith and free Lucifer was the blood that Azazel gave him as a child. The blood that Ruby gave him was just to strengthen his vessel, so Lucifer could possess him after he set him free from his cage. Finally, she promised him that Lucifer would reward her and Sam for their service. While Ruby was still trying to convince Sam to say yes to Lucifer, Dean burst in and stabbed her with her own knife while Sam held her in place, despite her telling Dean that it was too late.

She dropped to the floor dead, but with her mission accomplished: Lucifer was freed from his cage. In Sympathy for the Devil , Ruby's corpse could be seen when Sam and Dean were trying to escape the convent before God teleported them to a plane to protect them from the convent's destruction. Later, upon being confronted by Meg , Dean mistook her for Ruby until he was told otherwise. In Changing Channels , when the Archangel Gabriel puts Sam and Dean into a TV show, one of the programs they enter is a Japanese quiz show where Sam gets asked 'Which demon did you choose over your own brother?

The answer, being Ruby, was revealed by the game show host when Sam failed to answer, due to his lack of understanding of Japanese. This garnered a moment of silence from Chuck while the Winchesters were annoyed because of their past with her. Dean is excited after realizing that Sam got married to "fake Ruby" in the alternate universe, but they confuse Genevieve with their continued strange behavior. In Southern Comfort , while under the influence of the specter Vance Collins , Dean lists Sam "being in cahoots with Ruby" as one of his many mistakes.

Sam is left stunned by Ruby being brought up. The Winchesters track the Occultum to Anael who reveals that she gave it to Ruby to their surprise. Anael explains that she and Ruby would sometimes "pool our talents" and run a job together if the opportunity presented itself, but were not friends. In a flashback, Ruby visits Anael who compliments Ruby's brunette vessel , feeling that it suits Ruby more than her old vessel.

Ruby accuses Anael of holding out on her, but Anael insists that she respects their arrangement and doesn't butt in when Ruby agrees to return "some sap's" soul for a tidy fee while Ruby is good with Anael's "bleeding heart sideshow.

Ruby states that the Occultum is worth millions and points out that it greatly appeals to Anael. In the present, Anael states that she gave Ruby the Occultum and Ruby hid it until she could contact the buyer. However, this never happened as Ruby was killed by Dean first. Anael claims that the Occultum was hidden by Ruby somewhere in Hell before her death, causing Sam and Dean to travel into Hell to find it.

However, they are ambushed by demons working for Anael and discover that she lied and it was a trap. Having realized that there are too many holes in Anael's story about Ruby, Castiel decides to travel into the Empty to ask the demon herself about the Occultum. By having Jack remove most of his lifeforce, Castiel is able to enter the Empty where he calls out for Ruby.

The Shadow , taking on the form of Meg , interrupts Castiel, but reluctantly directs him to a pulsating mass which morphs into Ruby, taking on the form of her brunette vessel to communicate. Ruby is surprised to see the Seraphim , but remembers that she is dead and Castiel explains that he is almost dead. Castiel explains that he woke the demon up to find the Occultum and Anael told him that she had hidden it in Hell.

Ruby is annoyed, pointing out that it is a little obvious for a demon to hide something in Hell. Castiel states that Sam and Dean are searching Hell now, causing Ruby to ask how Sam is doing, stating that she liked Sam and they had a good thing before her death. Ruby reveals that Anael approached her rather than the other way around.
