Sometimes they need a little bit more recovery time. Or they need a period of rest days between workouts. I would say a younger athlete listens to just about every word that you tell them. An older athlete at times needs to be swayed into learning new techniques.
It seems like more and more student-athletes are specializing in sports at a younger age. What are your thoughts on sport specialization? I was a three-sport athlete up to college, and then in college I played two.
I kind of liked the different seasons, but I wrestled year-round and I played lacrosse almost year-round. So I would always dabble with those other sports in the offseason. I went through this when I was at Blair — and I coached there for 30 years — they wanted kids involved in two sports. One of the nation's top scholastic wrestling coaching careers has ended.
Attempts to reach Buxton, perhaps the most successful scholastic wrestling coach in the nation over the last 20 seasons, and Blair officials tonight were not immediately successful. Buxton had taught mathematics at Blair since and served as co-head coach there from to His influence on the sport showed clearly at this season's NCAA championships where two of the 10 champions,. You can only coach what walks through your door. We will not engage in speculation. Myself, I am a flawed man; I am not going to look for flaws in a man who has done so much right. Buxton is still relatively young, 56, and will be heard from again in the sport he loves because he is a rare commodity, a teacher, and a shaper of boys to men.

I've had a number of conversations with people and I say "Good luck with [pursuing him to coach]. I don't know if Jeff is ready [to accept] when anybody calls. Though Hardwick agreed with that notion, he would not get into specifics as to why Buxton stepped down just days before the school year. Hardwick did say that he had a very strong relationship with the former coach.
However, wrestling is not the end all and be all. If Blair can remain as one of the top wrestling programs in the country remains to be seen.
